「〜の騒がしい一群」。

Market Placeというサイトのエントリーから。 ティーポットのデザインが面白い。

'A young virtuoso with already one award to his name, Joey showed off a whole gaggle of designs, most of which are still on the boards. His teapot you all know, the others will arouse curiosity...'

ちなみに、virtuosoは、「名手、美術通」。on the boardsという表現は、「舞台に立っている」という意味で、この場合は、「作品がお店に並んでいる」という比喩として使われています。

a complete novice

「まったくの初心者」。

今日は、Oz forumというオーストラリアのフォーラムサイトから、基本的な質問の仕方を紹介します。

例文は、'Planting a veggie patch'から。

'G'day, I am a complete novice when it comes to gardening...I hope someone out there can give me some tips?? 「〜のこころ•注意をひっつかむ」。

この例文では、「ガチョウのオーブン焼きから漂ってくる香りに私の全注意が向けられた」というような意味で使われています。

基本的な表現ですね。

例文は、前回と同様、オーストラリアの新聞、The Age紙から。クリスマスにちなんだ記事、'Suet's come to this:a quest for the perfect pudding fat'です。

'The trend could go into reverse, however, as customers become increasingly conscious of wasting parts of the animals cultivated and killed for food'

favour ... over 〜

「〜よりも...を好む」。

例文は、オーストラリアの新聞、The Age紙から。クリスマスにちなんだ記事、'Suet's come to this:a quest for the perfect pudding fat'です。

'Suet is the hard fat from around a cow's kidneys. Christmas pudding cooks favour it over other kinds of fat because it has a high melting point and dense texture that grates up relatively easily and is resilient enough to hold all that dried fruit together during the crucial eight-hour cooking period'

Suetというのは、「牛や羊などの腎臓の固い脂肪」のことで、料理で使われるそうです。知らなかった！

「元気に育っている植物の部分を十分残してあげる」。

昨日買ってきたハーブたちが朝日をいっぱい浴びて元気そう。ハーブ育ては簡単とはいえ、なにをどうすればいいのか、ちょっとしたコツがほしいものです。ということで、今日は、'How to Grow an Herb Garden Indoors'とサイトで見つけたアドバイスをひとつ。使いすぎないで、元気な部分はちゃんと残してあげなきゃね。

ニューヨークの住宅情報です。屋上に家を建てるなんて！

ちなみに、 full-fledgedは「一人前の、ちゃんと手足のついた」というような意味。ここでは、「一戸建てのちゃんとした家」って感じでね。

写真がブログに載せようとすると、パソコンが固まってしまうですよね。どうしたものでしょう？

ちなみに、draperiesは「優雅なひだをつける手法」。

よく使う表現です。この装置をつけるだけで、普通のいすがロッキングチェアーに早変わり。子どもも喜びそう。

今日、子どもがいたずらをしているときの表情を見たときに出てきた言葉。

イノセントに見えて、実は、ちゃあんと分かってるのね。一歳半にして、その境地！

「（雨などが）激しく降る」。

ここでは、sheetが「〜を覆う」→「激しく降る、流れる」として、動詞で使われています。

今日のメルボルンの天気は、まさにこんな状況。今週一週間は雨降りが続くとか。子どものエネルギーをどう発散させてあげようか、今から悩むところです。

ということで、おなじみ、Ideas in Foodのブログエントリー、 'Windy'から。

'The rain is sheeting down as we get ready to set sail. We're gearing up for another fun cruise with plenty of play time in the kitchen. It'll all be sunny tomorrow after a good night's sleep. Bon voyage.'

ちなみに、gear up for...は、「〜に向けて準備•体制を整える」。「それいくぞ」という勢いを表したいときに、よく使います。

「味覚を広げる」。

Incredible Thingsというサイトのエントリー、 'Candy Sushi'から。子どもは手でつかんで食べられるものが好きですよね。その意味では、すしは最高だと思うけど、まだまだ生の魚を食べさせるのは、お母さんたちにとっては抵抗があるようです。でもこれなら？

ここで言うtrafficは、「ウェブサイトへのアクセスの流れ」のこと。driveは、その流れを操作するとい意味になります。

今日は、手作りの雑貨などをインターネット上で売り買いできるEtsyというサイトから、shaunaとstephenというアーティストインタビューの一部を紹介します。

「噴射式の接着スプレー缶」。

クリスマスもあと、４週間あまりに迫ってきました。毎年送るクリスマスカード、今年は手作りもいいかもしれない。手間もかからずお金もかからず、そんなアイディアがこちらの記事で紹介されています。

ある一つの考えやイメージ、メロディーなんかが、頭の中でぐるぐる回っているとき、ありますよね。そんな状況を表わすのにぴったりの表現です。









例文は、'slow progress'というブログから。 mel kadelというアーティストの作品について書いています。

'so beautiful, sad and silly - a perfect combination. this work has been bouncing around in my head lately, the little characters with their clouds and sun and blankets and mice....'
「とてもきれいで、悲しくて、ちょっとおかしいー完璧な組み合わせ。最近、この作品がずっと頭の中から離れない。くも、太陽、ブランケットとネズミで描かれた小さなキャラクター」

FE

洋裁用語で「機能的余地」。

FEはFunctional Easeの略なんですね。布地で服を作るときは、ニットと違って、サイズに余裕をもたせる必要があるということで、型紙などで目にする略語です。

例文は、Etsyというサイトからです。このシャツぜひ挑戦してみたい！



'So giving yourself a little space between your skin and the garment will allow you to reach, twist, laugh, and dance without fear of busting a stitch! Functional ease subsequently will be referred to as FE.'

「〜を目立たせる」。

accentuate〜with...で使います。



まっ、このドレス、すてき。こちらのサイトで見つけました。

「ネガティブな要素を打ち消してくれるようなもの」という意味があります。この名詞の後にはtoなどが続きます。

野菜が嫌いな子どももマフィンなら食べてくれる。時には、こんな素朴なアップルマフィンもいいですね。

'These aren't the fluffy, super sweet muffins one eats as an excuse to have dessert for breakfast. Rather, they are a genuinely wholesome, filling, and refreshing food to start the day. 「自分でもできそうな」というような意味の形容詞。

「この部屋好き。そのシャンデリアの触角みたいなとげとげにずたずたにされそうなのがちょっと怖いけど！少し変わっててオリジナティーがある。ちょっとしたヴィンテージの雰囲気もあったりね。それでいて、気取らない、なんか自分でもできそうな感じにも見えるし」

ちなみに、’mangle’は、「〜にずたずたにさせられる」という動詞。

「砂糖が加えられていない」。

最近、チャイにはまっている私。カフェではだいたいチャイラテを飲みます。昨日も突然チャイラテの発作が襲ってきた！家で作れないかなあと思い、ネットで調べてみました。

今日は、その中で見つけたレシピから。サイトはこちらです。

ちなみに、'pre sweetened'は、「既に砂糖が加えられている」 という意味。

resort to ...

「〜に頼る、訴える」。

後には、名詞か、動詞の...ingを続けます。「物事が思い通りに行かなくて、あることを行使せざるを得ない」というような意味で使います。

例文は、偶然見つけた、'Sawing Daisies'というシドニーに住む女性のブログから。”Spring Garden Preparations....."というエントリーの中で、長年の夢だった家庭菜園が実現した喜びを書いています。私も家庭菜園、夢なのよ。今は、キッチンにおいてあるハーブ鉢で我慢してるけどね。



'After 6 months of battling it out with the local nibblers, and having to resort to building cages around my patches I now have a small assortment of lettuces and salad leaves growing on top of each other, some very young celery, a few carrot and beetroot tops, spring onions and two onions.'
「野菜を食べにくる動物たちなんかと格闘して、しょうがなく自分の菜園の周りに網を張らざるを得なくなってから６ヶ月、それぞれのプランターには、レタスやらサラダ菜やら若いセロリやら、いくつかの人参、ビートの根、ネギ、そして、タマネギ２つなんかが育ってきて、小さいながらも、いろいろと集まってきました」

ちなみに、'the local nibblers'は、この場合、人ではなく、虫か小動物。オーストラリアには、ポッサムやらリスやらといろいろいますからねえ。

whimsy

「気まぐれな遊び心、一風変わったユーモア」。



なんとも言えない奇妙さと知的好奇心そそられる面白さ。そんなモノに出会ったときにぴったりの表現が、このwhimsy。その派生語の形容詞whimsicalもよく使います。



例文は、The New York Timesのコーナー、'Abstract City'から。Christoph Niemannというイラストレーターの落ち葉を使った作品に対する読者コメントです。

'Amid all the crises we are dealt every day, what a joy to find somebody who still retains a sense of whimsy and is so intent on expressing it…'
「毎日いろいろ大変なことがある中で、気まぐれな遊び心を持っていて、なおかつそれを真剣に表現しようとする人を見つけたときの幸せな気持ちといったら...」

「めずらしいこと」。



今回も、Design*Spongeのエントリー、'diy wednesdays: table lanterns'から。手作りのランタンがかわいい。これ、七夕の飾りの応用ですね。

'Since balmy evenings especially are a rarity in sf, we plan to take advantage of the warm weather and prepare a few dinners to eat up on the roof in the upcoming days.'
「サンフランシスコでは、穏やかな夜というのが、特にめずらしいので、この温かい天気を存分に味わうために、近々、屋上で夕食する計画を立てています」

balmyは「穏やかな」、sfは'San Francisco'の省略。

「〜に向いている、〜にうってつけだ」。



Design*Spongeというブログのエントリー、 'Beyond the big day:spirograph wedding'から。結婚式の食事会でのテーブルコーディネートについて書かれています。これ、私も好きな色の組み合わせ。



例文では、lendの過去形、lentが使われています。印刷用語が３つ。この機会に覚えておきたいですね。



'We opted for screenprint over offset printing or letterpress because we felt that the method lent itself to the artsy-crafty tone of this wedding.'
「平板印刷や凹版印刷されたものよりも、シルクスクリーンのものを選んだ。というのも、その方が、この結婚式の素人っぽさのあるアート的な感じに合っていると思ったから」

「〜の虜になる」という意味。



よくチェックするフードブログ、'Ideas in Food'の最近のエントリー'Perfectly cooked for us'から。

'We have certainly fallen victim to the curse of wanting to cook slowly because it is the perceived way to get optimum results.'
「私たちは確かに、時間をかけて料理したいという願望に呪われ、その虜になっている。というのも、ゆっくり調理することで、最高の結果が得られるとわかっているからだ」

ちなみに'curse'は、「のろい」。

seep into the mainstream

「主流に参入する」という意味。

このままマーケティング用語しても使えそうなフレーズです。

seep into...自体は、「〜に入り込む、しみ込む、浸透する」という意味。

文字通り使えば、Tons of oil seeps into the Gulf of Mexico every year.「毎年、何トンもの石油がメキシコ湾に流れ込んでいる」とか、ちょっと比喩的に使って、Her songs seeped into everyone's soul.「彼女の歌がみんなの心にしみ込んだ」とかね。 いろいろと応用できそうです。

では例文。前回の続き、The Age紙のワインに関する記事、'The odd ones are in'からどうぞ。

'What is exciting now is that these so-called alternative varieties are deservedly seeping into the mainstream.'
「今、何が面白いかというと、そういったいわば、新しい種類のワインが、正当派として、支流に参入してきている、ということだ」

the bane of one's existence

「[人]の悩みの種、身の破滅のもと」という意味。

オーストラリア主流紙The Ageの記事、'The odd ones are in'から。

'Sauvignon blanc and pinot gris. Together those varieties have become the bane of many a sommelier, some winemakers and the occasional wine writer's existence.'
「セヴィニオンブランクとピノグリ。それら二種類のワインがともに、多くのソムリエ、ワイン生産者、そして、ワインライターの悩みの種になっている」

one last-ditch campaign

「苦しまぎれの最後の売り込み」という意味。

last-ditchの後には、pitch「売り込み」、effort「努力」、 attempt「試み」といった名詞が続きます。

前回と同じ、The New York Timesの記事、 'A Stuffing Strategy Grandma Understood'から。

'I decided to pitch one last-ditch campaign. I begged my parents to let me make a different stuffing. It worked.'

「グルテンを食べないお客さん」という意味。

小麦粉などに含まれるグルテンにアレルギーを持つ人たちを食事に招くときは、ちょっとした気遣いが必要。グルテンフルーの食品を使うか、グルテンが入っている食品の代用品を使うのが、エチケットです。

ということで、The New York Timesの記事、'A Stuffing Strategy Grandma Understood'から。

'Substituting for the bread would be challenging yet fun, and friendly to any gluten-avoiding guest.'
「パンの代用品を考えるのは大変だけど楽しくもある。そして、グルテンアレルギーのゲストにもいいしね」

common denominator

「共通分母」という意味。

数学で使われる「分母」という言葉を、「共通しているもの」という比喩として使います。こういう数学用語、英語になると、なかなか出てこないものが多い。これもその一つかな。ちなみに、「分子」は'numerator'です。

David Youngという、メルボルンを拠点に活動している作曲家のインタビューから。

'What's important is that we have a space in which we work together, because often it will involve someone from a very different background, so in a way the space is the only common denominator.'

iffy

「不確かな、何とも言えない、問題ありの、あやしい」といったような意味の形容詞です。

接続詞のif「もし」から派生した単語で、ここでは、「不確かなもの」というように、名詞として使われています。

それでは例文です。私がよく読む、The New York TimesのFood&Wineの記事から。

'Not only was he suspicious of the new, but he also turned against old favorites. Chicken thighs and legs were out, and even the breast meat was iffy unless it was coated in a sauce of some kind.'

最初のフレーズはこれ。意味は、「蓼食うものも好きずき、人の好みはそれぞれ」。

今日読んだ本のタイトルにもなっていました。　例文では、eyeが複数形になっています。
